dieting and laxatives When laxatives are taken regularly for a prolonged period of time, one or moreadverse effects, some of which are serious and/or dangerous, can occur dieting and laxatives. The personmay experience abdominal cramping and pain, diarrhea and vomiting [which can causedehydration; electrolyte, fluid, and mineral (i.e., calcium, magnesium, and potassium)imbalances; weakened muscles; metabolic acidosis or alkalosis; tetany; and, insome of the worst cases, heart failure, among other things] dieting and laxatives. Excessive laxativeuse can impair absorption of vitamin D and calcium, which can cause osteomalacia(bone disease characterized by softening of bones), and can also impair absorptionof fat, which can cause greasy diarrhea and weight loss dieting and laxatives. Laxative abuse can alsolead to gastrointestinal (GI) tract damage, including weakening of intestinalmusculature, loss of GI protein, and cathartic colon, which is a poorly functioningcolon that develops after years of laxative abuse dieting and laxatives. This can lead to an inabilityto have a bowel movement when not taking laxatives (i.e., constipation) dieting and laxatives. Permanentbowel damage usually results if not treated in time dieting and laxatives. Liver disease is also possible dieting and laxatives. Some of these side effects may indicate other serious health problems as well,such as an eating disorder, which would require a visit to a health care provider dieting and laxatives. About Laxatives Two types over-the-counter laxatives that are commonly used include stimulantlaxatives, which irritate the colon to induce bowel movements using bisacodyl,senna, cascara sagrada, casanthranol, castor oil, or aloe, among other things;and, bulk-forming laxatives, such as those containing psyllium or wheat bran,which add bulk (mass and volume) to the bowel dieting and laxatives. Use of stimulant laxatives, inparticular, is not recommended for more than one week, or at a dosage greaterthan recommended on the package. |
